All students participate in Spanish language class. The students experience the language, history, and culture through direct instruction. Spanish prayers are taught, in addition to learning how to read and write the St. Pius School mission statement. This program introduces basic vocabulary, salutations and phrases using a multi-sensory approach to learning. No letter grades are given K-4th grade. In 5th-8th grade, letter grades are given.Spanish classes are very interactive- require class participation, completion of Spanish workbooks, worksheets, packets, etc. Latino/Hispanic holidays are introduced, while observing American holidays. Spanish vocabulary is incorporated for holidays observed.
*K-2 grades: Introduction to Spanish basic skills foundation, alphabet, numbers 1-100, shapes, colors, nursery rhymes, animals, vowels, animals, face & body parts, family, etc. Students participate in small fun colorful projects.*3rd-5th grades: Continuation~learning new vocabulary: household items, school, food, how to order in a restaurant, clothing articles, etc. Spanish workbooks will be assigned to each student. Seasons, calendar months, days of the week will be reviewed. Students will do small fun projects, as well as Latino country project.
*6th-8th grades: Continuation: Learning about Latino countries in South and Central America and the Caribbean. There is also emphasis on Spanish capitals and money currency.Spanish workbooks, packets, vocabulary and emphasis on Spanish grammar/ conversation, poems, tongue twisters will be the concentration for middle school with ongoing review of Spanish basic foundation skills, in preparation for high school Spanish 1. Spanish podcasts and websites will be required to view and practice Spanish at home. There will be a project presentation on famous Hispanic people.
