In second grade religion, students continue to learn about Jesus, the Church, and more importantly, they prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Second grade places a strong emphasis on core curriculum: ELA and math skills. There is a focus on reading to understand, reading fluently, and reading for enjoyment. Students also work on phonics and spelling rules. In English language arts, students will develop the literacy skills and content knowledge they need to meet the new standards by learning how to make meaning, build knowledge, express understanding, and gain a solid foundation of literacy. Concepts taught throughout the year in math are operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. The focus is on teaching core concepts and procedures and taking the necessary time needed to allow students to master them.
Social Studies and science teach students about the world in which they live.
Students also receive instruction in the areas of art, technology, music, Spanish, and PE.
