Fifth Grade Fifth grade is a very important year in a student's academic career. They are completing the intermediate years and preparing for the challenges of junior high. It is important that fifth graders become independent and responsible for their own academic progress. It is essential that they have the support of both the school and parents during this time of transition. The curriculum is challenging and meets the standards set by the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the state of California. Religion class is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as doctrine, scripture and liturgical lessons. Fractions and decimals are the main focus of the fifth grade math program. It also includes lessons in geometry, ratios, percents and more. In reading class students explore many different literature genres as well as an analysis of the elements of good literature. Students are required to do book reports monthly. Students work hard studying grammar, sentence construction and parts of speech and they apply what they learn to several types of essays. Social Studies finds the students adventuring with the explorers and discovering a new continent. This journey continues through the founding of the colonies, the revolution, forming a new nation and the westward movement. There are three main categories in the fifth grade science curriculum: Systems of Living Things, Weather and Space and Matter and Its Properties. The students are also fortunate to have classes in art, music, computer and physical education.
