Resource Program

St. Pius School has a Resource Program that serves students who may need reading intervention and/or help with language arts skills. The goal of the program is to ensure that each child will experience the most successful, self-affirming learning environment in listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling.

The classroom teachers refer students who may benefit from additional language arts support to the resource program. The resource teacher may perform initial screenings that can provide information about students' learning strengths and challenges. Parents, the resource teacher, the classroom teacher and the principal form a student study team. The team meets to discuss student progress, as well as the possibility of further testing and/or tutoring, and the creation of a classroom accommodation plan for the student, if necessary. The classroom teacher and the resource teacher confer and schedule small groups of students to participate in language arts activities. The focus is on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing skills and multi-sensory activities. The students may also work on auditory perception and visual perception activities, as needed.

There is ongoing communication between the teachers and parents to monitor the students' progress. As members of the student study team, the parents, principal and teachers work together toward meeting each student's unique educational needs.
